Agreeing on location sharing with family

Start with a conversation about what sharing would help with, who would have access and how each person can change their mind. A family connection is not automatic permission to see someone’s location.

Agree on the purpose

Talk about the situation you want help with. Is it keeping in touch on a journey, letting someone know you’ve arrived or checking in at an agreed time? A quick message or check-in may be enough without ongoing location sharing.

Choose people and boundaries

Agree on who would see the location and when sharing would be useful. Make sure everyone understands the choice and feels able to say no. In Lookout, family membership alone does not grant access; sharing requires approval.

Leave room to change your mind

Discuss how someone can stop sharing without needing to justify it each time. Lookout’s sharing controls are being built so people can review and revoke access.

Don’t read too much into a map

A phone can be offline, unable to obtain a location or out of battery. Agree on another way to keep in touch when updates stop. An app notification is not a guarantee of delivery or a response, and Lookout is not an emergency dispatch service.

Lookout’s current stage

This guide is published by Lookout, a personal and family safety app in development for South Africa. It describes the sharing principles we’re building around. The app’s full privacy policy and launch details will be available before release.
